When visiting South Canterbury in Central South Island NZ you will be spoilt for choice with many picturesque spots around the region for water based recreation. 

Timaru’s famous Caroline Bay is popular as a safe swimming beach with locals and visitors, as are walking along the Bay’s newly constructed boardwalk and lookout, boating, sailing or winter walks along the shoreline. Other popular recreational pursuits at Caroline Bay include windsurfing, kite-surfing and of course for the young, digging in the sand with a bucket and spade. A mid-summers evening meal of Fish and Chips on the beach, followed by a stroll along the waterline, is a local favourite you won't forget.

The famous Caroline Bay Carnival attracts thousands annually. This year, the 2010 Carnival will celebrates 100 years of operation - thousands of people around New Zealand will have fond childhood memories of this iconic annual event.

Just down the coast from Caroline Bay, well known surfing spot Patiti Point draws locals’ visitors to ride the waves. And for those seeking to try their luck fishing for local red cod, Timaru’s Number One Wharf is a popular place on a sunny afternoon. Visitors can also enjoy spotting an array of wildlife, with shags, dolphins, and the unique Little Blue Penguin often seen on Timaru NZ beaches.


Rivers
South Canterbury NZ rivers are renowned for their recreational opportunities including swimming, fishing, rafting, kayaking, boating and family picnics.

Visit the Timaru or Geraldine i-SITE Visitor Centres, or the Temuka or Waimate Information Centres for maps of the region including the main rivers. Main South Canterbury Rivers
  • Rangitata
    Fed by tributaries Havelock, Clyde and Lawrence rivers. The only year round Grade 5 river in the South Island NZ and famous for white water rafting and kayaking. Great salmon to be caught at the river mouth.
  • Orari
    Peaceful spot for a picnic, lovely scenery, enjoy a walk or bike ride along the riverbank trail.
  • Opihi / Tengawhai
    Safe slow flowing river, ideal for swimming and catching the elusive trout.
  • Te Moana
    Pretty summer drive up the valley, with a wonderful waterfall in the upper reaches.
  • Waihi
    Safe swimming holes, fishing for trout, a DOC camping site completes the scene.
