South Canterbury employment opportunities are many and varied. South Canterbury is a superb place to live and work!

With its historical roots in agriculture, South Canterbury NZ has rapidly embraced leading-edge technology and is now an important centre for telecommunications, software development, engineering and niche-market manufacturing, all supported by high-quality education and research facilities.

Today, agriculture in the Central South Island is diverse, with dairying having a significant impact. Increasing irrigation offers farmers a greater range of options for production – including intensive cropping, meat, wool and dairy.

Manufacturing and exporting operations are the largest employers in South Canterbury, with significant activity in the engineering, food and beverage industries. Local large-scale manufacturing operations include the Fonterra Clandeboye dairy factory, McCain food processing plant, DB Mainland Breweries, NZ Light Leathers, Alliance Group Smithfield meat processing plant, Silver Fern Farms and Barker's of Geraldine

Timaru has a well-equipped port, which provides an innovative and effective transport hub for the busy South Canterbury export sector, while daily flights to Wellington ensure close contact can be maintained with the capital city. With its Central South Island location, excellent IT services, easy access, and relatively cheaper overheads, Timaru proves a very viable base for many manufacturers and exporters.

The South Canterbury District Health Board is also a major employer, serving a wide geographical area with a team of approximately 950 staff and contractors.

In the education sector, South Canterbury has a growing reputation as a world-class provider. A tertiary institution located in Timaru, Aoraki Polytechnic, provides the opportunity to up-skill while in current employment. In addition to modern apprenticeships as diverse as carpentry, automotive, hairdressing and hospitality, local tertiary education options offer a wide range of business-focused short courses and full academic programmes.
