Visit the Tin Shed for an authentic New Zealand experience. Our country store is famous for its vast range of New Zealand-made knitwear and related products made from New Zealand’s finest natural yarns and fibres, merino wool, possum fur, mohair and alpaca. From luxury possum fur throws to basic essentials like fine merino undergarments, the Tin Shed caters for all budgets and tastes and our friendly local staff are on hand to help you find exactly what you are looking for. We can post your purchases anywhere in the world saving you 15% GST and we provide complimentary tea, and coffee. Outdoor seating is available for picnics.

Our shed was built in the late 1800s, serving first as stables, then later as a grain shed on the farm. This old shed has grown into a thriving country store, world-famous for supplying top-quality New Zealand made items at farm gate prices. Everyone will find a size and style to suit from our classic and fashion ranges, sourced directly from New Zealand manufacturers and craftspeople. We stock one of the country’s widest ranges of lightweight merino and merino-possum knitwear and sheepskin rugs, even selling garments knitted by local women in their homes. Don’t be surprised to find much more than you expected.

Our friendly farm animals would love to see you. Meet Hadley and the rest of the alpaca crew. Our multi-coloured flock of sheep generally keep their heads down but might be tempted to socialise if you have some food in your hand. Don’t be alarmed if our greedy kune-kune pigs, Winnie and Lucy, rush up to the fence demanding food. They have been fed but they are pigs, after all. If you want to be extra popular, ask a staff member for an animal snack bag. You can also see a wide range of heritage breed chickens. Our Enderby Island rabbits are listed as a rare New Zealand breed, and we will soon be joining the Department of Conservation’s kakariki native parrot breeding programme.

At the Tin Shed we believe in taking care of the environment and are try to find new ways to reduce waste and our environmental footprint. This is why each year we plant more native plants on our property. Many of New Zealand’s iconic plants, tussocks to totara, can be seen here. Most of our plants are species and varieties endemic to Canterbury. In Rangitata we are subject to weather extremes, heavy frosts and snow in winter, to drought in summer, so plants must be hardy to survive. Native plants not only make the place look great but also provide a habitat for New Zealand wildlife. Old farm machinery can be found around the property, intact, in pieces or recreated through sculpture by local artists.

You’ll find us on State Highway 79, just one kilometre off SH1 at Rangitata or just an 8 minute drive off SH72 at the Orari Bridge.
