Introducing... Raewyn Bell, Business Sales Consultant

Raewyn has joined Aoraki Development Business & Tourism in the new role of Business Sales Consultant, as a direct result of the increasing need for a person dedicated to the interaction and promotion of new and key businesses. Much of Raewyn’s role focus will centre around our hugely successful website www.southcanturbury.org.nz launched around 12 months ago, statistics now proving it to be the primary website used to locate information about South Canterbury. The website's purpose is to sell South Canterbury to the world, attracting visitors and businesses to visit, settle and invest in this wonderful region. Mutual support between Aoraki Development Business & Tourism and business/service providers will showcase the very best South Canterbury has to offer. “Flying solo seldom works, networking always works” – it’s as simple as that.

From a business ownership, management, sales and marketing background within a long established South Canterbury business that trades nationally, Raewyn’s wealth of experience and knowledge further endorses Aoraki Development Business & Tourism’s commitment to create District pride, growth and success. She is charged with contacting/interacting with key business and service providers of all levels, ensuring those providers show their best and therefore South Canterbury’s best face to the world.

MSI Postgraduate Internships 2012

MSI now invites applications from businesses to contract a postgraduate intern through our postgraduate internships programme. Applications close 7 May, 12pm (midday). There are 70 internships places available this year with innovative New Zealand companies.

MSI Postgraduate internships give New Zealand’s future innovators a head start in their careers by enabling them to gain and develop their technical skills work in a commercial research environment.

Seventy internships are available this year to employ postgraduate students from science, technology, engineering, design or marketing degrees. Also, postgraduate students who have had exposure to commercialisation (for example, through papers or practical experience) during their studies are eligible.

Based upon a maximum annual salary of $60,000, MSI will provide companies with $30,000 (plus GST) to cover the salary of the postgraduate for the first six months. The postgraduate must be employed by the company or engaged by a fixed term contract of at least six months duration.

MV Regatta Visits Timaru

MV Regatta Visits TimaruCarrying approximately 600 passengers and 400 crew, the luxury cruise liner MV Regatta spent the day in Timaru on Saturday due to a weather diversion from their planned schedule. As with other cruise ship visits, ADBT provided a courtesy shuttle service throughout the day, taking visitors from the Port to the i-SITE Visitor Centre for advice and information on what to see and do around the region. Welcome to Timaru fliers, Timaru maps and Discover South Canterbury Visitor Guides were also circulated to passengers to ensure they had plenty of local information at their fingertips.

Many visitors chose to explore the retail and CBD area, with retailers reporting large numbers of passengers in town during the day. Passengers also took the opportunity to explore further afield, including visits to the Botanic Gardens, Caroline Bay, the Te Ana Ngai Tahu Rock Art Centre and Opihi Rock Art sites.

Cruise ship visits are usually scheduled approximately 12-18 months in advance, with 2-3 cruise vessels currently visiting Timaru per season (October – April). ADBT, in partnership with PrimePort, has been working with key players in the tourism industry to grow this specialist niche market for the benefit of our local tourism operators, retailers and the hospitality sector. ADBT, in conjunction with Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism, will be running a cruise workshop in July/August to provide an overview of how to prepare your business for working with the cruise market and how a town centre needs to work collectively towards becoming recognised by the industry as a “cruise friendly” destination. If you would like to register your interest in this workshop, please email ADBT Tourism Manager Katerina Tiscenko: katerina@southcanterbury.org.nz
