Pleasant Point Highlights

Aptly named Pleasant Point (just 10 minutes drive from Timaru NZ), is well worth a visit, offering South Canterbury visitors plenty of family activities all year round. Street Map (pdf 209kb).

Steaming On

The award winning Pleasant Point Museum and Railway, with its fully operational steam locomotives and the world’s only Model T Ford Railcar, is always a winner with children and railway enthusiasts of all ages. Steam locomotives are operational throughout the year during Christmas, New Year, Easter, School Holidays and some weekends – check with the Timaru or Geraldine Visitor Centre for current opening times.

Walking & Cycling

For another family friendly option, try walking or biking along all or part the Opihi River Stop Back Track, which stretches approximately 13km one way from Arowhenua to the Tengawai Bridge. The Pleasant Point dirt bike track, located at the entrance to the cemetery, provides another fun safe option for kids to get out in the fresh air and burn off some energy. Ask at the Timaru or Geraldine Visitor Centre for a copy of our Mountainbiking Guide or see Mountain Biking and Cycling, for more details and maps of some of South Canterbury's favourite and most accessible tracks.

Local Food Legend

For a Taste of South Canterbury NZ we can truly call our own, don’t miss a café stop at Legends Café for a bite of the famous and wickedly indulgent Denheath Custard Square, a New Zealand icon that originated right here. Uniquely different, the fluffy high rise melt-in-your-mouth rich creamy custard creation is an experience in itself! Legends Café, once “Denheath House” and the former Pleasant Point Post Office, is where the legend began all those years ago from an old family recipe.

Historic Vineyard Cafe

Just a short drive from Pleasant Point is Opihi Vinyeard and Café - a 'must see' in South Canterbury, New Zealand. Established in 1991 on warm north facing slopes, the award winning vineyard and popular cafe offer a relaxed wine tasting and dining experience in a picturesque rural setting. Clifton Cottage, home of the Opihi Vineyard Café, was constructed in 1882 from local limestone. With walls eighteen inches thick and with an original cellar, this historic cottage is a local icon. Café grounds offer a children’s play area, petanque and spacious lawns for cricket and soccer. Opihi wines available for tasting or cellar-door purchase include Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Muller Thurgau, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
