History - back to top South Canterbury is rich in history, dating from the early Maori settlements to the first European pioneers who tamed the rugged land of this unique area. There are more than 300 sites of Maori rock art dating back to the 16th Century, the bulk of these being in the Opihi and Pareora river areas. One in particular has attracted great interest and must undoubtedly be classed as the "Michaelangelo" of all the known drawings. It is the "Taniwha" situated in a classic rock shelter near Hanging Rock. The drawing is credited to the Waitaha, the first moa hunters who would spend three to four weeks in the area, hunting and fishing. Richard Pearse (1877 - 1953) is disputed to have been airborne nine months before the Wright Brothers. He was an eccentric and built the plane and constructed the motor for an experiment. His memorial is located at Waitohi on the site that Pearse took off from. Relics of early aviation Pearse designed and manufactured are displayed in the Pleasant Point Railway Museum. The history of the region has been recognised with the establishment of three distinct Heritage Trails. These meander through the picturesque countryside, stopping at historic locations and offering an insight into early life in the region and the colourful characters who shaped the communities. For more information on these trails see the what to see and do section on this site.
