Lone Arrow Stud

For a real taste of rural New Zealand, with a touch of the American Midwest for good measure, take a trip out to Cave (about 25 minutes’ drive west of Timaru) to the Lone Arrow Stud Farm.

Sandy Mattingley is breeding some of New Zealand’s top showjumping and dressage horses, along with horses bred specifically for the country’s demanding hill country sheep stations. She is also specialises in breeding “coloured’’horses – including palominos, skewbalds and piebalds.

There are horses galore to admire and stroke but Sandy also has pet sheep, rabbits, chickens and the exotic, gentle alpacas from South America. A special feature of the property is the American-style barn and Sandy is also developing the garden area which is already available for picnics and evening barbecues (with the assistance of the nearby Cave country store). The stud farm is right next to Dog Rock with its unique Maori rock art.

As well as enjoying the animals and the great setting, visitors can also take a buggy ride and have their photographs taken on one of the very special horses on the property.
