South Canterbury Museum

The South Canterbury Museum is a great place for adults and children to explore our region's nature and history. Housed in a unique octagonal gallery space are displays featuring South Canterbury’s geology, wildlife, Maori history, early European settlement and maritime history. A mezzanine floor gallery features social history including costume, household bygones and many aspects of local life in the past. A temporary exhibition space features a changing programme of colourful exhibitions covering a variety of topics.

A local history library and research area gives access to a wealth of information and images covering local history, people and events. A rectangular wing to the south houses our 30,000 items in storage areas.
